In designing your small apartment, always remember that shape matters. In this section, we discuss some studio apartment layout design.
For instance, a simple, but elegantly chic theme for this studio apartment was achieved through square motif and blocks of color. The contained, boxy vibe of small spaces, on the other hand, was countered with the strategically curved wall.
In designing, it took into consideration that a small floor area has been occupied by the bathroom and the kitchen.
A large portion of the kitchen was kept from view through sliding doors when not in use, and the small space that is permanently seen has been decorated to camouflage with the surroundings.
Pivoting halogen spots lamps provide lighting in the small apartment, emitting a whiter light than conventional bulbs. This property makes it ideal for illuminating large expanses of color.
Hide ugly plumbings in the bathroom by placing it next to the kitchenIn putting the bathroom next to the kitchen, unsightly runs of plumbing are kept to a minimum. If there is no room even for a shower tray, it is best to affix the shower unit to the wall and put in a drainage hole in the floor. Mosaic and marble tiles work excellently, as they are hard-wearing as well as they are decorative. They are also an affordable flooring solution for a small space.
In contrast to a normal partition wall, the curved wall halts below the ceiling. This makes it less conspicuous, and allows the top to be used for storage. As the platform is seldom used, access can be done through a folding step-ladder.
Shelves kept behind huge doors serve as built-in storage. Using artists’ canvas stretched over wooden frames make them very light.
In the living area, draperies are replaced by more shutters, which are also as effective and a chicer alternative. To soften the mood in your small apartment’s sleeping area, you can use a sheet trimmed at one end to make a decorative pelmet. It also helps to filter the horrible view.
To provide a dramatic contrast to the neutral floor and the white walls, use blue paint in the ceiling. It also helps to bring the outside view inside your apartment. In addition to this, it makes your apartment look different from the outside in a row of similar looking units.
A Cliché But Tested Statement: Less is More
In a small one-bedroom apartment, the lack of architectural standouts had been cleverly turned into a positive aspect by adopting a pared-down approach to interior design. To create a large living area space, the two boxy rooms were opened up.
Doing so left ample space for the double bedroom.
For these types of rectilinear space, it is best to use plain ceramics, abstract art and modern pieces of furniture. The tiled floor lends a wider feeling to the room, while bold color blocks function as focal points.
As for the lighting, the low-voltage background lights in the wooden fin give a sleek and streamlined feel.
Layers are Your Friend
An excellent small apartment idea is the push for distinct spaces, achieved in part by the clever use of steps and half-levels.
The living area exhibits the full height of the space (see photo below), with the strategically positioned sofas and dining furniture, all placed on castors. The kitchen was also dictated by symmetry, as it was positioned lining up to the entrance stairs. The large steps likewise function as kitchen drawers .
Colorwashing the drawers and majority of the woodwork created a striped effect. It pairs perfectly with the fabric tones in the soft furnishings and screening of the apartment. As mentioned in Enhancing Hidden Gems, it also helps in raising the low ceilings.
The space is also divided in several levels horizontally. Putting a platform over the galley and the stairs created the main sleeping area. A bath and, surprisingly, a second bedroom have been strategically fitted into one of the rooms that trail to the main space. Extra storage was created in the area on the steps leading up to the bath and under the bed.
You would then be on the lower bed of the narrow room climbing the steps next to the bath (photo). There is enough space to climb onto the floor on the other side. Finally, seconds of climbing will lead you to a box bed.
